Archiving Historical Crustacean Images: A Scanning Project

DESCRIPTION: During crustacean research it is a common practice to photograph specimens in the field as well as in the lab (both alive and preserved). Each researcher then amasses quite a collection of images, both photographs, slides and negatives.

This project is concerned with preserving crustacean image material: photographs, slides and/or negatives. These images could then used for future research and/or to build on-line information data sets.

The intern will perform various tasks:

  1. scan photographs, slides and/or negatives to create digital images
  2. digital images edited for enhancement
  3. digital image files named following instructed protocol and organized by crustacean group
  4. photographs, slides and/or negatives placed into archival material provided
  5. material labeled as instructed and organized by crustacean group
  6. provide weekly work updates

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have experience in scanning photographic material and using Adobe Photoshop (CS5 or CS6). Intern must have excellent organizational skills, be detail-oriented, and able to work independently and efficiently. Some basic knowledge in archival protocol is helpful.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Through this project the intern will be exposed to and will become familiar with some of the principles of archiving historical and scientific image material. Knowledge of proper handling of image material will also be enhanced.

To apply email a current resume and a letter of introduction. Please include your interest in this project, your future goals, and a proposed work schedule (available dates with a minimum 20 hour work week).
