Research Experience for Undergrads!

The Smithsonian Institution’s Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama is offering a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) this summer from June 9, 2014 - August 15, 2014. It is a great opportunity for undergraduates to gain research experience, increase their knowledge of Latin American cultures and languages, and have a greater understanding for scientific publication and communication skills. Applications are due March 30, 2014.

What is the REU Program?

The REU Program in Integrative Tropical Biology is an international experience for students from the U.S. and Latin America. The program is built on 3 broad research themes:

- Adaptation and Resilience

-Species Interactions

-Drivers of Ecosystem Change

Each theme is driven by the common need to understand how biological systems are integrated to answer questions about the origins, maintenance, and preservation of biodiversity. This 10 week program allows for mentor-driven research at STRI on a project tailored to your specific interest. You will also participate in workshops, professional development activities, and networking events that will challenge you to critically think about science.

Who is eligible?

3rd or 4th year undergraduates who are interested in exploring the processes that generate our world’s extraordinary diversity. Our program reaches across disciplines in the traditional life sciences as well as engineering, mathematics, and computer science departments. We also encourage applications from groups under-represented in the sciences.

What will interns receive?

-Airfare, housing, and food allowance

-$5,000 Stipend
