On Tuesday, November 18, 2014, Omar Eaton-Martinez, Intern and Fellows Program Manager at National Museum of American History, gave a career talk to SI fellows and interns about transitioning from a fellow or intern at SI to a long-term career. If you couldn’t make this enlightening engagement, here are some of the key takeaways:

  • Having a vision
    • Have an idea of what you want to accomplish, then set a path
    • Do homework on the institution, how it the organization is run to see how your skills fit in
  • Tell someone
    • Run you ideas past professionals and friends - talk to people
    • Let people know of your interests
    • Don’t assume or infer anything
  • Once on the job - think about what’s next
    • Build skill set and make use of social networks
    • Join a professional network, for networking and professional development
