2014 Smithsonian Career Center Conference

The Smithsonian Institution held it’s third annual Career Center Conference December 4 and 5th. Hosted by Karen Carter of OFI and Omar Eaton-Martinez of NMAH, and held in NMAH’s Warner Bros. Theater, this year’s conference was a huge success. Based on feedback from prior years, the event was extended from one day to two. Attendees, career center professionals from higher learning institutions,came from all over the U.S. from as far away as California and Puerto Rico to learn more about academic appointments for their student body. They enjoyed a wide range of panel discussions on topics such current internship opportunities, diversity outreach and inclusion, MOUs and partnerships, and the SI fellowship process. Attendees also heard from current interns, as well as SI staff who were former interns and fellows. As as a special treat, attendees had the opportunity to choose from two optional tours on the first day: the new National Museum of African American History and Culture building site with John Franklin, Director of Partnerships and International Programs, or a behind-the-scenes sneak preview of artifacts with Steve Velasquez, curator of the upcoming Many Voices, One Nation exhibit at American History.
