History Heard: The Sweet Sounds of SI Fellowship Work

This week the National Museum of American History (NMAH) opened an exhibition focused on audio-based artifacts entitled “Alexander Graham Bell and the Origins of Recorded Sound.” The exhibit displays some of the first sound recordings as created by Alexander Graham Bell.

It also includes artifacts categorized by SI fellow Patrick Feaster’s work during his Lemelson Center Fellowship. Feaster categorized the museum’s experimental sound recordings in 2011 with the aim of identifying, categorizing, and contextualizing the audio artifacts, some of which had never been studied!
