Behind the Camera at African Art

Recently, National Museum of African Art (NMAfA) curators Bryna Freyer and Amy Staples were kind enough to give a tour of the exhibit Chief S.O. Alonge: Photographer to the Royal Court of Benin, Nigeria to Smithsonian fellows and interns. This extensive tour included the genesis of the exhibit, behind the scenes stories, and detailed explanations and history of many of the items on display.

Although the exhibit is about a photographer, it touches on many different themes, including colonialism, African traditions, 20th century fashion and culture, and science of photography.
