Fear The Turtle, Not Your Career

The Smithsonian Institution (SI) trekked up the road to College Park, MD to answer some questions and meet some University of Maryland (UMD) students. The Office of Fellowships and Internships (OFI), National Museum of American History (NMAH), Office of Human Resources (OHR), and Office of Equal Employment and Minority Affairs (OEEMA) all sent representatives to inform the Terrapins about what SI can offer them.

The event, which lasted a couple hours, offered opportunities for the different branches of SI to answer questions about internships, fellowships, and employment opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students at UMD.

Gordon Bullock, from OFI, advised prospective SI interns to look through our Smithsonian Opportunities for Research and Study (SORS) guide to see what research is being done by SI employees. This helps young people find out what sort of internship they might be interested in. This extra step will also let interested parties know what interests and skills are in demand at SI.

One of the biggest misconceptions about the Smithsonian, is that it is one building. Contrary to popular belief, SI consists of 19 museums, 9 research centers, and affiliates around the world. Chances are there is something out there for you, whether it be it be related to the humanities, sciences, business, event planning, marketing, accounting, or any number of fields.
