Smithsonian postdoctoral fellow Dr. Jennifer Nagashima is part of the Cornell-Smithsonian Joint Graduate Training Program, where Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) scientists and Cornell researchers collaborate. Recently they became the first to successfully use in vitro fertilization (IVF) to produce healthy, living puppies from cryopreserved embryos. On December 9, 2015 the team published their results in PLOS ONE. Their work may be used to help endangered canid species, such as maned wolves. Meanwhile, the seven puppies are happy and healthy.
