NIU students: Anthonie Tumpag and Shannon Thomas

The Smithsonian Summer Institute in Museum Anthropology (SIMA) program at the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) has gained two new interns for the summer from Northern Illinois University, Anthonie Tumpag and Shannon Thomas.

The program lasts four weeks and combines formal classroom, laboratory, and lecture sessions with individual data collection and meetings with subject matter specialists. Anthonie hopes to study the Smithsonian’s collections from across maritime Southeast Asia, Madagascar and Oceania to explore these people’s shared ancestry through an anthropological lens, while Shannon wants to explore the relationship between culture and the natural environment of the indigenous Filipino Ifugao group.
