From the Arts to the Zoo

SI fellow Ginny Blackson works on completing the Smithsonian Intern/Fellow Challenge at the zoo

Ginny Blackson recently completed her Neville-Pribram fellowship at the National Museum of the American Indian’s (NMAI) Vine Deloria Library, and she completed the Smithsonian Intern/Fellow Challenge. Congratulations, Ginny! You can read more in Ginny’s own words:

My Neville-Pribram fellowship at the National Museum of the American Indian’s Vine Deloria Library has been amazing. Completing my project “Core Voices: Indigenous Perspectives in Washington State Standards” in a short 6 weeks was a little intimidating and it would have been easy to only concentrate on my research. The Smithsonian Intern/Fellow Challenged served as my motivation to get out and enjoy the privileges of being a fellow. I especially enjoyed visiting the smaller galleries like the Renwick and Hishhorn museums. And I will ready admit that I lost count of the times I just dropped into the National Museum of the American Indian to spend a few moments that the Kay Walkingstick exhibit. Through the challenge I learned the art of the selfie and how to live Tweet. I have heard from so many friends and family that they enjoyed my far too many Facebook posts. The most wonderful surprise was getting to attend the staff preview of the Museum of African American History and Culture where I got up close with the Parliament Funkadelic Mothership!!! The Anacostia Community and Postal Museums were a great surprise. Although the Art and Industries Building was closed I still took time to enjoy the architecture and the flowers. I highly recommend taking the guided tour of the Smithsonian Castle. It took me several trips to Natural History to see everything and I used my weekly Imax tickets to enjoy Art & Space. So I challenge others to take this amazing journey and don’t forget to visit the pandas.
