Sea Slugs and Success at YES!

Emma Rebour, a high school student from the Washington D.C. area was a Youth Engagement through Science, (YES!) intern this summer at the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH). Through the 12-week program, YES! students learn scientific research and communication skills alongside experts in the field, take college preparation classes, and tour behind the scenes at the Smithsonian.

As a capstone to her internship, Emma presented her research in the style of a TED-Ed talk. In the video, she reflects on the role of failure in the scientific process. She describes how she assisted a Ph.D. student by making microscope slides of sea slug samples. In the midst of the difficult process of preparing these samples, Emma chose to see her failures as learning opportunities. The slides she made became part of a display at the NMNH.
