Improving Electronic Access to the Freshwater Mollusk Collection Internship
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The intern will be responsible for cleaning up the electronic data records (in EMu) of a large collection of freshwater mollusks and helping to link these records to digital images of collection localities (habitats). Work will involve carefully reviewing and comparing EMu records with original field books, and linking these records with digital images of collection localities (that were scanned from 35 mm slides). This project will be conducted in the Department of Invertebrate Zoology at the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH).
QUALIFICATIONS: Competency in Excel and attention to detail; prior experience and continued interest in data-basing aspects of museum collections management. An interest in invertebrates is desirable but not required.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: The intern will gain experience with the NMNH’s online specimen catalogue (EMu) and the various data-basing aspects of museum collections management. This project will be invaluable for students interested in pursuing a museum career.
