Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Internship

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center’s (SERC) Internship Program offers undergraduate and beginning graduate students a unique opportunity to gain exposure and experience in a research environment. The program enables students to work on specific projects under the direction of the Center’s professional staff and is tailored to provide the maximum educational benefit to each participant. SERC is focused on understanding the causes and consequences of environmental change for marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems. Interns at SERC conduct independent projects (field of research and education) over 10-16 weeks, utilizing our 2,650 acre reesarch site on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay to provide novel insights into some of the most profound issues challenging our world today; including habitat loss, climate change, and invasive species. Students will become familiar with much of the research being conducted at SERC, but they will devote most of their time to a project and content area of particular interest to them. In addition to their research, students participate in field trips, seminars, and lectures. All participants are expected to integrate what they have learned during their experience and present a brief seminar at the end of their appointment.
